We Welcome you to
the Art of West Africa. The debate as to whether these objects
are of pure ethnographic interest or within the world of "fine
art" has been quieted with the recognition that these powerful
and beautiful objects live in both worlds. Here is art, in the
truest sense of the world, with "anonymous" artists...
we do not know the names of the individuals or groups who created
these pieces, but the lack of a signature on a piece only demonstrates
that the culture did not provide for "signature" as
we know them. When was the piece created? We have to be careful
so that we are not biased by dates. Whatever the culture, African
or Western or Oriental, the age of a work has never been a guarantee
of its quality.
Here at the Art of West
Africa we have amassed a collection of pieces that are stirring,
powerful, sometimes sexual, haunting and strangely eerie. We invite
you to ask us for
more information about those pieces that interest you. Rather
than attempt to classify the collection by culture or people (for
the most part would be an error to believe that homogeneous people
in certain, defined areas, existed) or by objects names (I.E.
"masks, "weapons" etc.) we offer our collection
to collectors and others appreciative of this art form. Our collection
results from many years of of collecting and numerous trips to
West Africa.
Our Museum
Quality collection offers those works which we consider either
extremely rare or unusually beautiful or "pure" example
of a work or both.
Our Decorative
collection represents carefully selected, although more affordable
works.
We will make additions
and updates to the site periodically . Please feel free to contact
us for inquiries as to availability of objects not shown here.
